The world has been on and off sheltering down in attempt to reduce COVID-19 infection numbers which has resulted in many things, not least of which is DIY projects. From making bread, growing ones’ own vegetable garden and brewing beer to cutting hair. People are also doing for themselves what they once had to step out of their homes to get others to do for them.

The closure of non-essential businesses left many missing their regular facials and DIY facials made it onto many people’s to-do lists. With the right guidance and help of the correct tools, you can perform a facial experience in your own home. Here is a look at some home facial devices and facial tools that are not only trending but we feel are result driven and can give you that near-professional treatment while you stay home and stay safe.
What are facial devices and why do we need them?

Facial devices are used in clinic and in homes to massage, stimulate and treat the skin to achieve healthy skin. Once used only by trained professionals, facial machines have since become more compact, easy to use and more affordable, allowing them to be increasingly be used at home.

We need devices and products to:
1. Open pores
2. Exfoliate
3. Cleanse
4. Increase collagen production
5. Increase blood circulation
6. Reduce Wrinkles

1. Open pores
Our skin naturally has pores or small openings to release sweat and oil as well as for hair follicles to attach to. The release of oil or sebum is necessary to keep the skin hydrated and protected.
Sometimes, though, our sebaceous glands produce more oil than our skin requires. This can happen because of dry weather, hormonal imbalances, diet or the use of wrong products. Because our pores are secreting more oil than necessary, they expand and trap dead skin and excess oil. This makes them appear larger and spoil our complexion. These large pores also give way to black heads and break outs.
Facial machines that use steam to soften skin and open pores allows the skin to undergo deep cleaning and get rid of impurities such as these loathed blackheads while stimulating circulation. Opening the pores also makes it easier for moisturisers and other skincare products to penetrate the skin.

2. Exfoliate
Our skin naturally regenerates every 30 days or so, shedding dead skin cells and replacing them with new ones. Just because we naturally shed dead skin cells does not mean that we can effectively get rid of them.
As we age, it takes longer for dead skin cells to fall off the skin’s surface. When they are not removed, dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface of our skin, causing it look dull.
Fine lines and flaky patches will also develop and the skin then becomes rough and dry. These dead skin cells that build up can clog pores as well and cause the production of excess oil that leads to skin blemishes and acne.
Proper exfoliation or the removal of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface is, therefore, necessary to unclog pores and reveal the new skin cells below. This also lets skincare products penetrate the skin more deeply, making them more effective.
Exfoliation can be done by hand with the aid of facial scrubs, chemically with peels that dissolve and remove dead skin cells or by using facial cleansing machines.
Many facial machines come with brush and sponge attachments for this purpose. A cleanser is applied to the skin and the brush or sponge is then gently moved over the face, rotating to remove dirt and dead skin cells. Be careful as sponges need to be cleaned properly after every use.

2.1 Scrubs
Exfoliation is the process of sloughing off dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. One should understand that there are actually two types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical.

Mechanical exfoliation:
Mechanical/ Granular exfoliation calls for the use of a tool or product that will act to physically remove dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. Below we have listed your options for a mechanical exfoliator that will suit your preference.

At the Laser Beautique we love our BeauCleanse. This tool is very effective in loosening congested pores as well as refining the skin texture for a brighter, softer and smoother skin.
Mechanical Exfoliation: Washcloth or exfoliating towel.
Optiphi have a stunning Muslin Cloth. It’s a microscopic buffing cloth to complete the cleansing process, revealing smooth and brightened skin. Frequent use increases micro-circulation within the skin, supporting overall vitality.

On the other hand, we have chemical exfoliators, and depending brand to brand. Most chemical exfoliators involves the use of enzymes, beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid to dissolve dead skin cell build-up from the surface of your skin—no physical scrubbing needed.
Our best recommended chemical exfoliators are:
Nimue Exfoliating Enzyme; This is a must have in anyone’s skin care routine. It makes such a big difference in your skin and is an amazing product to use just before a special event for your make up to go on perfectly smooth, it also leaves your skin with a healthy glow.
Optiphi refine- foliant: This is a potent chemical exfoliant that effectively smooths rough skin texture. The triple advanced complex of Ascorbic, Lactic and Salicylic Acids in this ‘home-peel’, brightens the complexion, softens and moisturizes the skin.

Something to keep in mind when adding an exfoliant to your routine, whether chemical or mechanical, is that how often you should exfoliate depends on your skin. Some people can handle daily exfoliation, while others may only be able to handle exfoliating once a week. Pay attention to how your skin responds to see what works best for you.
With the mechanical one is advised to use this 1-2 times weekly, more than this will cause microscopic tears in the skin as well as disrupt your skins natural oil balance.
For chemical one needs to be extra cautious, as the AHA can leave your skin feeling sensitive and prone to sun damage if a SPF is not applied post use.

3. Cleanse
Apart from the removal of dead skin cells, our skin benefits from cleansing as well. This involves the removal of access oil, sweat, dirt, impurities and make-up. Clean skin provides a clear foundation for the application of skincare products and make-up, ensuring better absorption.
While soap and water may be able to remove some dirt, it may not be effective in getting rid of oil and dead skin build-up. These may require deeper cleaning. Facial machines can help to do this.
There are different types of facial machines that can cleanse the face. Some use vacuum attachments that suck out the dirt and dead skin, exfoliating the skin and cleaning the pores. I am not a fan of the suction as I feel these cause broken capillaries.

Others come with brushes that remove make-up, apply cleanser to the skin and massages the face as well.
There are even those that use soundwaves to loosen dead skin and open pores so the skin can be cleaned. Known as ultrasonic ion cleansers, they are pore-openers, exfoliators and cleansers all rolled into one.
Often, these facial machines that cleanse also help to stimulate blood circulation, tone and tighten the skin, and alleviate acne and spot problems.

3.1 Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber

Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber Facial combines two facial beauty treatments to help cleanse, firm and revitalize the skin, improve the absorption of serums deep into the epidermis.

4. Increase collagen production

Collagen is a hard, strong and fibrous protein found naturally and abundantly in our bones, muscles, skin and tendons. In fact, collagen, which makes up a quarter of our total body mass, is the most abundant protein our bodies produce.
It is necessary for forming a scaffold that gives our body strength and structure, thus holding our body together. It is also what protects our organs. Collagen contributes to soft, supple skin that is elastic, wrinkle- and line-free. In essence, it is an anti-ageing protein.
Unfortunately, over time, the body produces less collagen. From the age of 20, collagen production begins to decline by 1% every year. Post-menopause, collagen production in women experiences a significant drop. Exposure to UV rays and other lifestyle choices such as smoking can speed up the decline as well.
That is why most skincare regimens include stimulating the production of collagen for better skin tone and elasticity. There are facial machines that use light therapy to stimulate collagen production like our BeauRejuve.

Red and near infrared wavelengths of natural light stimulate the mitochondria in our cells, allowing them to better take in light, oxygen and nutrients from food to convert them into energy. This boost of energy, in turn, stimulates collagen production which requires massive amounts of energy.
The Beaurejuve has 4 parts to the device, which allows for a functional treatment at home whilst providing you with various beneficial factors.

– Ems (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
The EMS is great for target the facial muscles which are stimulated to aid relaxation and definition to the face. The stimulation brings fresh oxygenated blood to both the muscles and skin and aids in lymphatic drainage which in turn will create a combination effect of general rejuvenation from the fresh blood and improved lymphatic drainage.

Radio Frequency uses the tissues natural resistance within the various layers of the skin to transform the RF energy applied to the skin into thermal energy. The converted thermal energy then stimulates the collagen cells to start reproducing collagen and elastin as needed.

– Light Emitting Diode (LED):
The LED Light works by sending energy producing packets of light energy into the layers of the epidermis, which assist the skin with a variety of treatments such as, easing any redness, minimising any ageing effects, treating sun damage, assist in treating stretch marks, as well as treating mild forms of acne.
There are 7 different LED lights on the Beaurejuve available:
• Red – Enhance collagen regeneration within the skin
• Green – Inhibits the over production of melanin – treats pigmentation and dark marks on the skin.
• Blue – Kills of any bacteria that may cause acne
• Yellow – Is used to give your skin a glow
• Pink – Assists in treating sluggish circulation
• Pink Flashing light – Assists in penetrating the products into the skin through Mesotherapy.
– Mesotherapy.

The Beaurejuve uses Mesotherapy as a delivery system to open the pores and push the serums and moisturisers that you use as a medium further down into the skin, to feed the relevant cell repaints as needed. It is a painless process that uses a micro current to gently stimulating the pores to be opened and closed as needed. This therapy can often be referred to as many other names such as; Electroporation and Mesoporation.
Ideally, we do suggest that you start off with using the machine twice a week for the first month, there after you may use the machine every week to maintain the results achieved.

5. Increase blood circulation
Blood circulation is vital for bringing oxygen, cells, proteins and nutrients to the skin while removing carbon dioxide and waste. Without good blood circulation, the skin can suffer from a multitude of problems including tissue death and infections, wrinkles and fine lines, dryness, flakiness, discolouration, rashes and acne.
That is why promoting good blood circulation can help skin become softer, more radiant and younger looking. Good blood circulation can also hasten healing of injuries and scars, and contribute to skin that glows.
There are facial machines that solely massage the face to increase blood circulation, there are others that open up pores, exfoliate and cleanse while also promoting circulation. These usually have extra devices that can be attached such as a disk so facial muscles can be massaged.
