WHEN YOU GET LASER HAIR REMOVAL:

You’ve heard laser hair removal is a godsend. After all, it permanently removes body and facial hair and can save you tons of time (and money) over a lifetime! But it’s important to understand the full laser hair removal process to manage expectations. Let’s break down what happens when you get laser hair removal:

THE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TIMELINE

Laser Hair Removal is not a one-and-done treatment. For maximum results, it requires eight to twelve treatments with each spaced four to six weeks apart. (Note: Facial hair is affected by hormones and grows faster which requires more sessions at shorter intervals). The process is purposely spaced this way to account for the full hair growth cycle: Anagen (active stage), Catagen (short transitional phase between the Anagen and Telogen), and Telogen (resting phase preparing to reset into the Anagen stage). These phases are all occurring simultaneously, so targeting hair in the active stage means hair in the other phases lives on. Laser can only treat hairs in the active stage which is why multiple treatments are needed to target majority of the hairs over time!

Here’s what to expect along the way…

PRIOR TO TREATMENT

You will be invited to The Laser Beautique for a face to face or virtual consultation where all the do’s and don’ts will be discussed. We will explain all the contraindications and why laser may not be suitable for some. We will use a flip chart and explain how Laser works, why you should not have IPL for hair removal, why you need a course of treatments and how our treatments are pain free. We will also explain why you will not be allowed to wax or mechanically remove the hair with a tweezer or epilator. You can and must shave between treatments and we request you shave clean a day before your laser appointment.

7-10 DAYS AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

The hair that was in the active growth stage during your treatment, about 10-15% of the hair in the treated area, will begin to fall out.

3-5 WEEKS AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

The hair that was not in the growth stage prior to treatment, as well as hair that wasn’t completely treated, begins to grow out. This hair will be targeted in your next treatment.

WITH EACH PROGRESSIVE TREATMENT

More hair in the active growth stage is targeted and permanently removed. At this point, more and more of your hair will stop growing back altogether.

AFTER A COURSE OF TREATMENTS

By the end of your course of treatments, up to 80% of unwanted hair is permanently removed. Why only 80% you may ask? Laser works on the pigment of the hair and is not effective on light, blonde, red, grey or white hair. Therefore, light softer, finer, less noticeable hair will remain and will grow back slower. Many opt to have Apilus  Electrolysis treatments to get rid of any stray hairs after their course of laser. Effectiveness of Electrolysis does not depend on the pigment present in the hair.

After a course of laser hair removal, the skin in the treated area is also smoother and softer. Any need for shaving or waxing is minimal but the amount of hair left over after a course varies from person to person. This is due to variations in hair density and hair type, as well as overall adherence to pre-care and post-care instructions (i.e. avoiding the sun) and treatment spacing guidelines. You must also be aware that hair can stay dormant for up to 5 years. You may want to opt for touch-up treatments to stay as smooth as possible.
