What is Dermaplaning? It’s a method of exfoliation that consists of using a 10-gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion.

I CAME, I SAW, I DermaplanED

Dermaplaning is a favourite in the entertainment industry, specifically among models and actresses. Why? because it also eliminates that annoying peach fuzz that cakes up makeup. Facial peach fuzz can be enhanced by harsh production lighting and high-definition cameras. That annoying facial fuzz is also noticeable in sunlight. Many women prefer to Dermaplane and have that smooth, fuzz free feeling.

Another benefit of Dermaplaning is that by getting rid of dead skin cells allows for greater penetration of skincare products. As mentioned, Dermaplaning creates a flawless canvas for makeup to glide on smoothly. In fact, cosmetic dermatologists and aestheticians often use dermaplaning to help prepare skin for more intrusive procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels.

Dermaplaning is a super effective exfoliating treatment in which a trained aesthetician uses a surgical scalpel to gently scrape off any dead skin cells on the surface of your skin and (along with the peach fuzz on your face).

First, the aesthetician will cleanse and thoroughly dry your skin and then she will proceed with dermaplaning. Once complete, aesthetician will offer different serums which your skin will soak up.

Dermaplaning is particularly helpful because the build-up of dead skin and microscopic hairs can make your complexion appear dull, flaky, and can even cause breakouts due to clogged pores and hair follicles. Which is why this form of mechanical exfoliation is essential for maintaining an even, healthy glow.

Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are both forms of physical exfoliation, but the methods are very different. Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skin cells, which also helps to uproot clogged pores around the nose, mouth and chin. Dermaplaning safely scrapes off the top layer of skin, so it is well suited for drier skin types and anyone who wants to get rid of peach fuzz. But, keep in mind, both methods are good for almost everyone, it could just boil down to your personal preference. Dermplaning does not remove peach fuzz permanently. Electrolysis is the only treatment known today to be FDA approved for 100%, permanent hair removal for all skin and hair types. Frequently asked questions

How long does Dermaplaning take?

About  30 minutes

What is the technique?

This technique is safely performed by using a specialized sterile surgical instrument. Its painless procedure and can be compared to the sensation of shaving your legs, but in this case, it’s on your face. First, the aesthetician will cleanse and thoroughly dry your skin. Next, she’ll pull an area of your skin taut with one hand, and hold a sterile blade at a 45 degree angle in the other hand and use short, swift strokes to scrape off dead skin cells and peach fuzz.

Is it safe?

Dermaplaning is extremely safe when performed by a professionally trained aesthetician utilizing the correct tools and techniques.

What are the immediate effects?

There are no side effects and zero downtime. After the treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may already look very pink, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.

Is there any downtime after Dermaplaning?

No, that’s one of the benefits. The skin instantly has a healthier glow and feels amazingly soft, plus makeup glides on effortlessly for a flawless finish. This is a must have procedure before an important social event or television appearance. Do have one or two treatments to get your skin ready before you schedule your Dermaplaning 2 to 3 days before an event.

Who can be treated?

All skin types can benefit from Dermaplaning. Darker skin tones actually have more layers of skin so as they age the skin tends to sag rather than wrinkle. Dermaplaning removes these extra layers of skin, helps correct pigmentation concerns and provides a more youthful and healthy glow.

Typically clients over 35 are the best candidates and will return for regular treatments, it helps with sun damaged, fine line, very dry skin and dull skin. Men can be Dermaplaned on non-beard areas only. Because it makes use of a scalpel blade clients with enflamed acne should pass on it until their complexion clears up.

What areas can be treated?

Dermaplaning is performed on the face, under the chin and sides of the neck. Dermaplaning should not be done on the eyelids or chest. Sometimes, technicians who are still learning practice on forearms and legs as the skin is tougher in these areas.

How often can this procedure be performed?

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks. Treating the skin in this manner actually removes about 2 to 3 weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. The technician should allow the skin to complete its normal skin cycle of approximately 21-30 days before repeating the treatment.

Doesn’t it make vellus hair grow back thicker?

This is physiologically impossible. Shaving does not make hair grow thicker. The soft fine vellus hair will grow back slowly in about 4-6 weeks. When the hair begins to grow back it might feel different because the hair was shaved or cut straight across the surface of the skin. When one shaves, it appears that the hair has grown back thicker. This is only because the hair was bluntly cut versus having a natural point to it which seems thinner.

What do I do after the treatment?

Avoid sun exposure on the treated area. Apply SPF40 or higher regularly on the treated area to avoid the risk of hyperpigmentation. The next treatment can be booked in 3-4 weeks’ time
